Cello Lessons

head of a fiddleI am pleased to offer private cello lessons from my home studio in the beautiful Mount Pleasant neighbourhood of Vancouver.

** As an update during Covid times– I am currently doing all of my teaching online, via Zoom. **

For the past thirteen years, I have been working from my home studio, teaching both children and adults. My students benefit from a flexible teaching approach, tailored to their goals. In addition to cello technique, I also incorporate some basic theory for my beginner students (especially for those who have limited or no previous musical background). This would include learning to read standard music notation, rhythms, etc.

For my intermediate students who are interested, I enjoy creating opportunities to learn duets, and participate in small chamber music groups with other students at a similar level. This is a fun way to gain experience and develop the skills needed for making music as part of an ensemble, and to connect with other students as well. Most of my students come for weekly lessons– which is recommended. I am happy to take on new students throughout the year– please contact me for current rates and availability.

Although my training is mainly based in classical techniques, I take a personalized approach to teaching, and enjoy working with my students to help them realize their goals.

As one example of an ensemble I’ve been involved with since 2004 (as a founding member and cellist), feel free to visit my string quartet’s page here: Syrinx String Quartet.

Composition/ Orchestration/ Arranging Lessons

I am also pleased to offer private instruction in composition, orchestration, and arranging (beginner to advanced). As my students’ goals are diverse, I am able to be quite flexible with materials covered– please contact me if interested, and if possible, provide some details about your current project(s)/goals. I am experienced in many genres, including orchestral, chamber music, choral/vocal, and electroacoustic composition/sound design.

I am qualified with a M.Mus. in Composition (University of British Columbia, 2006), as well as being an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre, and a member of the Canadian League of Composers, SOCAN, and the Association of Canadian Women Composers. I am also a recent recipient of the national Barbara Pentland Outstanding Composition award, and am currently Composer-in-Residence of Allegra Chamber Orchestra.
